This sheet contains relevant information for configuring your Speednet account on Windows 95. You should have your Speednet Setup Sheet with you, as this has your Setup Configuration details you will require.

 

How to Set Up your Modem
  1. Open the Control Panel. (Click on the Start button then Settings then select Control Panel)
  2. Double click on Modems.
  3. If a modem is not installed the Install New Modem window will automatically be opened. Before continuing be sure that your modem is connected and turned on.
  4. Click Next so that Windows 95 can automatically detect your modem.
  5. If a modem is detected click OK. If no modem is detected, contact your modem supplier.
  6. Click on Next then click Finish.
  7. Restart your computer by clicking Start, Shut Down, and Restart.

 

How to Install Dial Up Networking
If you have connected to the Internet before, Dial-Up Networking will most likely already be installed on your computer. To check that it is correctly installed follow these instructions. You may need your Windows 95 CD so please ensure you have it before you start.
  1. Open the Control Panel. (Click on the Start button then Settings then select Control Panel)
  2. Double click on Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click on the Windows Setup tab.
  4. Double click onto Communications.
  5. Put a check in the Dial-Up Networking box.
  6. Click OK.

  7. If Dial-Up Networking is not installed correctly, you will get a prompt for your Windows 95 CD. Insert your CD into the CD ROM drive. Windows will copy the files you require to your hard drive from the CD. This may take a few minutes.
  8. You will need to restart your computer for the new settings to take effect. Click on Start, Shutdown, put a check next to Restart and hit OK.

 

How to Install & Configure your Network Protocols
The following instructions are designed for a stand-alone computer. If your computer is on a Local Area Network (LAN) please talk to your LAN Administrator before proceeding.
  1. Open the Control Panel. (Click on the Start button then Settings then select Control Panel)
  2. Double click on Network.
  3. If you have TCP/IP and Dial-Up Adapter in the list of Network Components you have the necessary protocols for connecting to the Internet. If not, complete the following steps.
     
  4. Click onto Add.
  5. If Dial-Up Adapter is missing select Adapter from the list and click Add.
  6. Select Microsoft from the Manufacturers and select Dial-Up Adapter from Network Adapters and then click OK.
  7. If TCP/IP is missing, click onto Add, select Protocol from the list and click Add.
  8. Select Microsoft from the Manufacturers and select TCP/IP from the Network Protocols and then click OK.


  9. To Configure Dial-Up Adapter:
  10. Double click on Dial-Up Adapter.
  11. Click the Bindings Tab and ensure that "TCP/IP" is ticked.


  12. To Configure TCP/IP:
  13. Double click on TCP/IP
  14. Click the IP Address Tab and set it to "Obtain an IP address automatically".
  15. Click the Wins Configuration Tab and set it to "Disable WINS resolution"
  16. Click the Gateway Tab and ensure it is empty
  17. Click the Bindings Tab and ensure that "File and Printer Sharing" is not ticked.
  18. Click the DNS Configuration Tab and set it to "Disable DNS", then click OK.
  19. Click OK. Windows may then prompt you to restart your computer. Click Yes at this prompt.

 

Setting Up your Dialer
  1. From the Desktop double click on My Computer, then double click Dial-Up Networking.
  2. Double click Make New Connection.
  3. Type Speednet into the Name field and click Next.
  4. Type the phone number for Speednet 019 833 1201 into the Phone Number field.
  5. Click Finish. You will now have an icon labeled Speednet


  6. To Configure the Dialer:
  7. RIGHT click the Speednet Icon.
  8. Remove the check next to Use Country Code and Area Code.
  9. Click onto the Configure tab. The speed should correspond to the speed of your modem.
  10. Click OK
  11. Click onto the Server Types tab. The Server Type window should be set to "PPP:Windows 95, NT" or similar and TCP/IP should be the only one with a check. If others are checked remove the checks.
  12. Click onto the Enable Software Compression and the TCP/IP Settings button.
  13. Server Assigned IP address should be checked.
  14. Name Server Address and Server Assigned Name Server Addresses should be checked.
  15. Use IP header compression and Use default gateway on remote network should be checked.
  16. Click OK until you return to the Speednet icon in Dial-Up Networking.


  17. To Create a Shortcut on the Desktop:
  18. Right click the Speednet icon. Select "Create Shortcut" from the list of options.
  19. Click OK
  20. Close the Dial-Up Networking window. You will now see a "Shortcut to Speednet" icon on the desktop. To connect to the Internet, double click on this icon, enter your Username and Password (ensuring both are in lower case) and hit connect.
